wwwescape's Blog: Submit Blogger Sitemap to Google and Yahoo!

Sitemaps tell search engines about pages on your blog that they might not otherwise discover. Google provides a way to submit sitemaps through Google Webmaster Tools.

To submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools:

Click on 'Add site' on your Google Webmaster Tools home and enter your blog's URL address. (If you already have your blog added you can skip this step and click on the blog's URL address that is displayed in the table below.

In the next step, if you haven't already verifed your blog, you will will need to verify your blog, before proceeding. Choose the Verification method as Meta tag and copy the meta tag code that is displayed.

Login to Blogger.com, go to Layout > Edit Html and paste the meta tag code you copied right after the <head> tag and Save the template.

Now go back to Google Webmaster Tools and click the Verify button. Once your blog is verified, you will get access to the Dashboard.

In the Dashboard to Site Configuration > Sitemaps and click the Submit a Sitemap button.

In the popup that opens,

add one of the following:
feeds/posts/default (added by default)
Note: If you use FeedBurner, the above will give you an error.

feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated
Note: This should work perfectly in most cases.

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100
Note: This is a bit advanced and you can create one at the Blogger Sitemap Generator. You will also be able to submit your sitemap to Yahoo! and Bing.

feeds/posts/default?redirect=false (UPDATE)
Note: This is the correct (official) method.

Click on Submit Sitemap and you're done. Once the sitemap is successfully submitted, check back in 2 to 3 days to see detailed statistics of your blog (indexed pages, any errors, etc.)

Note: As you can see, the status of feeds/posts/default gives me errors. This is because I use FeedBurner. Don't worry about this as the other sitemaps are doing their job.

TIP: Once the sitemap has been submitted and your blog urls have been indexed, you can check your blog's search results in Google easily. To do this go to the Google homepage and type site:myblog.com as the search query and press Enter. Google will show only results from your site.

To submit a sitemap to Yahoo! Site Explorer:

Enter the URL of your blog and then click on Add My Site.

In the next step, if you haven't already verifed your blog, you will will need to verify your blog, before proceeding. From the menu on the left, click Authentication. Choose Add a META Tag and copy the meta tag code that is displayed.

Login to Blogger.com, go to Layout > Edit Html and paste the meta tag code you copied right after the <head> tag and Save the template.

Now go back to Yahoo! Site Explorer and click My Sites. You will see that the status of your site has been verified and is represented by a green checkmark.

From the menu on the left, click Feeds.

Add one of the following:
feeds/posts/default (added by default)
Note: If you use FeedBurner, the above will give you an error.

feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated
Note: This should work perfectly in most cases.
